About this deal

A lovely story about a girl who meets a flying saucer and alien, then spends the rest of her life hoping she will see them again. A 2 week English unit with reading and writing activities based on the story The Night Box by Louise Greig. In these panels, language is conveyed through facial and body expressions as well as the power of illustration.

Starred Review* More than anything else in the world, little Heather wants an alien to come take her away so she can live among the stars, so she sits on Wonder Rock, flashing the beam of her flashlight on and off into the night sky. I feel very lucky to have worked with a number of brilliant authors as well as having the opportunity to create my own stories. This review was written by Richard Charlesworth Richard is an experienced Key Stage 2 teacher and Professional Teaching Enhancement Lead at Springwell School, Heston. Repeating phrases and images draw key moments together whilst, equally, the artist is happy to refrain from any words and let the wordless images do the talking.

Now it’s their turn… read the stories Little Red Riding Hood, Three Little Pigs and Gingerbread Man. David first started to draw when he was very young, creating Star Wars and Indiana Jones ‘mash up’ comics for his older brother and sister. The rule is to balance an egg or similarly shaped item upon a spoon and race with it to the finishing line) Your grown upscan decide on the prize: it could be an Easter Egg or a day of wearing PJs all day! No, I mean that we are clearly seeing an artist playing with and exploring his form with greater assuredness.

It is an utterly unique reading experience, with unhurried wordless spreads giving way to multipanel sequences, with a handful of elegant sentences scattered throughout like stars. It’s a heartfelt story and a story of adventure and discovery and figuring out the things that matter and that make a difference. A happy and comforting read, one downside, this begins with the young girl sneaking off at night and communicating with strangers, this should be such a no-no in children’s books, but I see it again and again.
