About this deal

So no matter which watch you choose from Orient’s 3 Star series, it’s going to be a bold statement piece. They have a funky little range of colors here, with everything from bright gold to forest green on stainless steel. The color gradient looks even better in person than it does online, and the applied indices and brand logo give the dial a nice texture that’s excellent for the price. The Strap

It features a very lightly brushed vertical pattern that gives this already unique dial an added touch of character. I really enjoy the fun dial Orient chose for this 3 Star model, it’s a nice splash of color that is in no way too loud for everyday wear or even for some dresser occasions.

except the 3 position, because that's where the date window is. When either hand is over that, it gets a bit washed out. Not really a big deal, I suppose. The crystal is mineral and slightly protrudes from the small polished steel bezel. It’s not the best crystal, but it performs its function well. Supposedly, the proper name for this timepiece is the Orient Three Star, sometimes written as Orient 3 Star. Orient was not alone in wanting to maintain its watchmaking heritage. Many of the Swiss luxury brands were able to weather the quartz storm, although some were eventually sold to Swatch, one of the big beneficiaries of the quartz revolution.

As with most information about Orient’s history, finding details about when the 3 Star line was introduced is difficult. The general consensus is that sometime in the 1970’s Orient wanted to produce a reliable watch that did not require battery changes but also did not need regular service like most automatic watches of the day. Each model of the Orient 3 Star has a different dial design, and some dials are truly eye-catching with shiny finishes and vibrant colors. I've not seen any of these watches for sale under the model name Crystal. Some call it that because the word Crystal is physically printed on the dial just below the three stars. The Orient 3 Star collection began production in the 1970s, although the brand had already been using the three-star logo on other watches since the 1950s.

As one might imagine, the gold theme is also carried over to the FAB00009N’s handset. Orient went with basic baton style hour and minute hands and a thin second hand, all colored gold. The handset works wonderfully with the dial and is very easily read against the green color. It doesn’t take much force to open it which can be annoying and hazardous to the watch if it unexpectedly opens. The outer surface has a brushed finish that runs the length of the clasp along with the lion logo and “ORIENT” stamped on it. The fold-over arms are lightly polished. Automatic watches can be a bit annoying if you switch them frecuently, if you wear the watch a lot it is not much an incovenience. Unless you're very sedentary, is unlikely that the watch would stop over nightime if you wear it at least 7-8 hours during the day. Accuracy of automatics is far worse than with a normal quality quartz, but just readjusting time each 1-2 weeks is ok. Here’s where the Orient 3 Star gets into “love it or hate it” territory. There’s only really one subdued option for the color of the face and dial: The blue dial on stainless steel version.

It appears the Orient 3 Star has a respectable history with providing developing countries an affordable timepiece that they could depend on, but does that make the watch worth buying? I have had the green dial reference FAB00009N for several weeks and have experienced both the positives and negatives of wearing a low cost watch in everyday situations. Measuring a comfortable 37mm in diameter, the Orient 3 Star FAB00009N sits nicely on the wrist of both men and women. Its short lug to lug length of 43mm means it wears relatively small and the vast majority of people won’t have to worry about it overhanging their wrist. Its overall size is inoffensive and not too flashy, which makes it a great everyday watch for those who’d rather fly under the radar. To me, the case dimensions are spot on for a basic everyday watch. It’s nice to see Orient ignored the trend to “upgrade” the 3 Star by enlarging its case size like so many other watch brands. I think they're really good watches for the price, designed for low maintenance and anyone who likes small dress watches should try one. They have their charm, but also they have their flaws. If you're used to higher WR rated watches maybe another automatic could be a better starter watch. If you're okay with the flaws the Orient 3 Star is a very unique and nice little watch. It is a good starter automatic watch if you were used to take off watches before shower and don't use them at pool, etc. As a secondary watch or if you already have a collection of watches they're always a nice addition. The Orient 3 Star’s stamped fold-over clasp is a disappointment and is very cheap feeling when using it. The metal is thin and every time I open or close it I feel like I’m going to bend it with minimal effort. When closing it, the only place it’s secured is a small metal post that holds one of the fold-over arms with friction alone. How long do you have to shake it so it runs all day (and usually well beyond that?) A minute or less. Takes hardly any time at all.

It’s a fun watch to wear when you want to mix things up but still be taken serious. Sure it doesn’t have name recognition like other brands, but that’s one of the nice things about Orient. People on the street or in the office may never look twice at the 3 Star but you will know that this line of watches have been on the wrists of people all over the world for decades, many of whom relied on it for its simplicity, durability and affordability.

Every other watch in this series goes for a bold look, combining unconventional colors with either stainless steel or faux gold cases and bracelets. Many may not miss these functions, especially manual winding, as being an automatic watch, it is self-winding and does not require manual winding. This is my second Orient automatic. I have an Orient diver's model, and I wanted to get something smaller and lighter for everyday use. I really wanted an Orient, as the two other well-known brands of automatics that I have tried have been unsatisfactory in terms of accuracy and/or durability. My Orient divers watch, on the other hand, has proven to be very accurate, and still looks and feels great after years of daily use.Even as the most economical option from Orient, the steel is adorned with a pleasant combination of polished and brushed surfaces, giving the watch a certain personality. One change I’d like to see here is fully drilled lug holes to make strap changes a little easier. Although not too difficult as it is, drilled lugs would reduce the chances of scratching the lugs with the forked end of the spring bar tool. Of course, all models feature the three golden stars that identify the collection, as well as the logo with the characteristic Orient lions, which are clearly visible. The markers are usually applied to enhance visibility, although there are also designs with large printed numbers. The 1970s were very challenging years for the watch industry as quartz technology gained ground, and many companies had to close as they became non-competitive.
