It is quite laid back by comparison but the mix of the mid tempo groove and the passionate playing of Mark Knopfler makes it an album highlight for sure. When Brothers in Arms was released for example it was picked to show off the new CD format, to me the original CDs sound very good so I can see the rationale behind them using these. DISC ONE of the set features an early show from the group, recorded for FM Radio Broadcast at The Old Waldorf, in San Francisco, on 31st March 1979, shortly before the release of their second album Communique. The album was remastered and reissued with the rest of the Dire Straits catalogue in 1996 to most of the world excluding the U.

The drums and bass guitar are clear and detailed but there is a lack of drive and punch in the sound. Also in the news recently has been some artists saying they are only going to release their music on vinyl because CD is a finished format! The definitive version is the current (2021) MOFI vinyl release which is very good but not quite reference quality. When tapes are digitised, they are simply numbered, and individual tracks are not identified, resulting in many hours of work to even understand what you are hearing. It obviously does not take up as much room as 6CD in jewel cases but a bit more attention to detail on the packaging would have been nice. Brothers In Arms may be a classic by all means, but it lacks the honesty and simple sound that gives this album so much class. This reissue comes courtesy of Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, who have pressed the album up on double vinyl mastered from the original sources and sounding frankly immaculate - an edition for the audiophiles to nod approvingly to.

The tracks in red were either overdubs or tracks moved from the slave reel, don’t forget we recorded 96 tracks but consolidated it down to 48 for mixing. However, when it comes to the version of ‘Tunnel of Love’ as originally presented so mysteriously in mono, Andy and I elected to introduce (using software) at least a subtle widening effect during the mastering process.
