Well written and well plotted, most of the characters in this book have little conscience or redeeming qualities. on deck brings them a tempting new target in the shape of Miss Charnwood and her niece, the beautiful Diana, only child of the immensely wealthy Fabian Charnwood. Goddard does a good job of tying the plot into 20th-century European history, including the start of World War I and the trauma of post-WWII soldiers trying to re-integrate into society, and often failing because of then-unrecognized PTSD. This is just one of many exciting passages in the book and I was surprised at how I actually enjoyed being in the head of a con-artist.

It is simple to avoid this though by continuing up Hob Lane past the Hobbit, then turning right onto Goose Nest Lane. Some of Robert Goddard's books are among my all time favourites, others are real turkeys and it's impossible to tell the difference without investing a deal of time in the thing.
