This seems simple enough, but it’s actually quite a complex category. Descriptors like “Supima” and “long-staple” abounded, and I found myself curious about the origins of each type of cotton, too. Sean Cormier, chair of the textile development and marketing department at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, helped to break down these terms, noting that different species of cotton relate to staple (or fiber) length in different ways. This, in turn, relates to the length of a single fiber within a “boll” of cotton, or the little puffballs that grow on cotton plants. Cotton is broken down into three staple lengths: short staple (the most common type), long staple and extra-long staple. Generally speaking, longer-staple cotton yields a final product that’s softer and stronger. Most of the cotton grown in the United States is Upland cotton, and it’s great when used to make items such as jeans or flannels. But when it comes to sheets and towels, long-staple cotton (such as Turkish cotton) or extra-long-staple cotton (such as Pima, Supima or Egyptian cotton) are preferable. Absorbency is another important consideration when purchasing towels, but this factor is often hard to discern when you’re shopping in-store or online. Just imagine it: the early morning sun is shining weakly through your bedroom curtains. You get out of bed, ready for a big day at work. Most everyday towels have 400 to 620 gsm. It soaked up all the water in our lab testing, leading to a perfect absorbency score. It passed our abrasion tests with flying colors, and we didn’t notice any snags or loose threads, proving the strength of the thread fibers. We applied foundation and mascara to the material, and both stains completely came out in the wash. A beach towel is often made of thinner material than other towels to promote faster drying. The main purpose of a beach towel is to provide a soft surface for someone to use to lie down on the beach or on a sun lounger, which is why they tend to be longer than most other towels.
