About this deal

The film version of this novel, also titled War Horse and directed by Steven Spielberg, will open Christmas Day 2011. Later, David and two horses from the hospital are killed by a stray shell, putting Albert in a state of depression, as David had cared for him like a brother. When he hears Albert's story, the grandfather sells Joey to Albert for one penny, as long as Albert promises to keep Emilie's memory alive. Determined to keep Joey, Albert does what he must: His “gentle words and kindnesses of the past” (14) are replaced with shouts and flashes of a whip “whenever [Albert] felt [Joey isn’t] giving it [his] best” (14).

Morpurgo recognises the three men in the dedication section of the book, naming them as Albert Weeks, Wilfred Ellis and Captain Budgett. Before she died, Grandfather made her a promise that he would do everything he could to find the horses again and take care of them. Both horses and their riders survive, but Trooper Warren and Captain Stewart are taken as Prisoners of War by the Germans, and Topthorn and Joey now belong to the German Army as ambulance horses. The production opened on 17 October 2007 and was met with critical acclaim – its use of life-size puppets of horses from the Handspring Puppet Company won an Olivier Award, Evening Standard Theatre Award and London Critics' Circle Theatre Award for design. Now that he has met Albert, he thinks Emilie would understand that Joey would be better off with his original master. After a long and terrible war, Joey and Albert are ready for whatever new beginnings come their way.

taking the lead (or the reins) is young actor Jeremy Irvine, who has earned his stripes with both the National Youth Theatre and the RSC. As a side effect of the interest in the film adaptation by Steven Spielberg, the publishers of the book have recently been "inundated" with requests for translation rights for the book to coincide with the film's release in late 2011. War Horse filters the horror, inhumanity, and cruelty of war through the experience of its equine protagonist, Joey. They spend their days trudging through the mud with sores on their legs, and they go for days without food and rest.

It was a dark November evening and I came into the yard behind this big Victorian house where they all live, and there he was, Billy, standing in his slippers by the stable door and the lantern above his head, talking. He makes friends with Topthorn, a beautiful black thoroughbred, and the two are inseparable from that moment on. The two meet Friedrich, who befriends them and tries to care for them, growing to love Topthorn and telling them that he did not want to be a soldier. He tries to join the army with Joey but is too young, so he promises Joey that, as soon as he is of age to enlist, he will go and find the beloved animal.

The farmer’s wife and his young son, Albert, visit Joey, and Albert and the horse are immediately drawn to one another. Nevertheless, both sides in the conflict relied heavily on the use of horses and other pack animals to move men and materiel to and from the front lines. The cavalry regiment is eventually sent by boat to France, where the troops will join the front lines. He urges the cruel man not to go higher because he will pay any amount necessary to win back Emilie’s horse. Since the early 1980s, Morpurgo has produced no fewer than 50 novels, poetry collections, anthologies, and adaptations, several of which have been adapted into operas, stage plays, and films. How can we help to give those around us more confidence if they are feeling nervous about something? Albert's father now dotes on Joey like a grandchild, and Joey resumes his life as a farm horse alongside his beloved old Zoey.

This latter is the No Man's Land between the British and German armies where much of the fighting took place. He learns that they will be auctioned off, likely to local butchers who will slaughter them for meat.Because the novel is offered from a horse's point of view, however, human relationships within the book are less satisfying. The novel is often considered one of Morpurgo's best works, and its success spawned a sequel titled Farm Boy, which was published in October 1997. This book's simple vocabulary makes it accessible to kids from age 10, but there is a good deal of violence and death in War Horse.
