I'm really disappointed because I wanted to like this. I'm willing to overlook a lot but I can't overlook an entire relationship. Perhaps if we were given more everyday scenes in which they did normal things together like eating, cuddling, or enjoying a movie together their relationship would've felt more believable. As is presented it's hard to even imagine them letting loose and laughing at something together. I think most people here would agree, if I say that everyone here has come across a special manga someday, that once read, turned out to be the axe in the frozen river that is the love for this genre or medium. From his temperament to his physical posture and body language, it’s clear that his time with Shun has dramatically impacted him. Shun, by contrast, remains much the same. That’s not to say that he comes across as a flat character without dimensions so much as his core flaws and anxieties remain relatively consistent across the span of the film. There are some mentions throughout of his difficult history with his family, and these add context to his actions although much remains subtle about the presentation. The film isn’t vague by any means; it certainly gives the viewer the bare minimum information needed— but little beyond it. Your mileage may vary on if this is executed effectively or if Shun’s character could have still used more fleshing out.BL is a genre with very, very low standards. I’d say that the only genre that’s worse off in that regard may be shows for kids, and even that is debatable. So, once in a blue moon a BL anime that isn’t utterly terrible is released, and just by the virtue of not being completely garbage it gets praised as the best thing ever.
