About this deal

A book for golf lovers everywhere. Following the early years of golf in the US (1920s & 1930s) through its history and changes including stories on games and players. Its predominate focus is a Match in 1956. It follows the creation of today's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am known in the 30’s as the Bing Crosby Pro-Am (or Crosby Clambake), an annual weekend of partying and golf hosted by Crosby and attended by everybody who was anybody.

Now the biggest and my favourite characters in the books are without any doubt the dogs Charlie and Daisy (tho we didn’t see much of her) and the cutest kid ever who deserves the world Sam.Neither of the professionals had completed high school, both dropping out after the tenth grade. Both had had hard times financially during the ‘20s and ‘30s. Both the younger amateurs had attended college: Ward at the U. of N.C., where he’d won the NCAA Division I championship in 1949, and graduated with a degree in economics; Venturi at San Jose State. At this time both were getting along very well, with decent paying jobs (see below) that allowed them to compete whenever they felt like it in amateur or open golfing events. After retiring from golf in 1967, Venturi became the color commentator and lead analyst for CBS Sports, a position that he held for the next 35 years – the longest lead analyst stint in sports broadcasting history. Have to admit I was sad when Coben decided to part ways with Myron Bolitar (my favorite character ~ read every novel in that series!). The book pads its length with an Afterward, that is meaningful. You want to know what happened to the participants after The Match, particularly Harvey Ward who is not a well-known name to the casual observer of 1950's golf. And there is an Appendix that is even better, describing the development of Pebble Beach, Cypress Point and Pasatiempo and the interesting people who had the vision to develop the area. Wilde had never met his father. Or his mother. Or any family member. He didn't know their names or where he was born or when or how he, as a very young child, ended up living alone in the woods of the Ramapo Mountains, fending for himself. Now, more than three decades after being "rescued" as a little boy-"ABANDONED AND FERAL!" one headline had put it; "A MODERN-DAY MOWGLI!" shouted another-Wilde sat no more than twenty yards from a blood relative and the elusive answers to his mysterious origin."

Mark Frost, describing EDDIE LOWERY, the 10-year-old caddy made famous in the film THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED, who went on to become a multi-millionaire and serve on the executive committee of the US Golf Association. --From Frost's book, THE MATCH: THE DAY THE GAME OF GOLF CHANGED FOREVER. Characters. I loved both characters equally! I love Evie, she was funny, quirky and just so relatable. I genuinely enjoyed her and wished she was my friend. I loved reading about her story with epilepsy and how that has affected her today. Jake was also just as great. He was actually so funny, plus I loved his flirty side. And as a parent he was great; the way he cared for his daughter, Sam, was so cute (literal dad goals!)There is a reason why Harlan Coben is one of my most trusted and favourite authors. His books are always clever and full of twists that keep you guessing right until the very end. A rainy day in Sydney saw me curl up and get lost in Wilde's world and I loved every minute of it. Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Harvie Ward, and Ken Venturi get their story told by Mark Frost - the wonderful author of the Greatest Game Ever Played. The book reads like a novel, focusing the central theme around one fateful day in golf's history. For the game of golf, it marked the end of a tradition. That of the amateur golfer. This also lead me to believe less what she was convinced of hence I was always more keen The characterisation is excellent, with a few deft strokes the author seems to be able to paint a personality picture. Wilde is fascinatingly complex and very likeable and its great to see Hester Crimstein cropping up again too. This article needs additional citations for verification. Although paper matches were patented in the 1880s, an early paper match "folder" was patented in September 1892 [2] by Philadelphia patent attorney Joshua Pusey. However, the matchbook as we know it was patented a few weeks later by Charles Bowman of Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Pusey challenged Bowman's patent, but Bowman's patent was upheld. Pusey sold his patent to the Diamond Match Trust in 1896 and then served as the company's patent attorney. Bowman's company, the American Safety Head Match Company of Lebanon, PA did not last long, and Diamond Match Co. adapted his design into their product, becoming the first mass-producer of paper matchbooks. Well I`m late to the party here as this was my first Harlan Coben read and it certainly didnt disappoint. It's a book that weaves the biographies of these four men, as well as other characters during this time, around the central theme: The Match. It's a wonderful display of mastery of the written word. Its a book that inspired me. This is what I want to write.

Retailers:

If you haven't read a book by Harlan Coben, why not? You are seriously missing out on some amazing characters and stories. Everything that I took issue with in The Boy from the Woods was made up for in this one. Wilde’s character is fully formed and has some depth, and the mystery is compelling. Even better was that my armchair detective skills failed me. There were many twists and turns and surprises. Even though the identity of the killer is somewhat predictable, I was still surprised by the reveal.
