About this deal

Finally, I just blogged about what I saw as an homage to “Bread and Jam for Frances,” in Debbi Michiko Florence’s wonderful Jasmine Toguchi series! I would also like to know more about the colorizing controversy, as well as Hoban’s decision to abridge the book as an easy reader. My heart aches when she turns down the breaded veal cutlets, though, because they were my favorite food growing up and I just can’t make them like my mom did. I'm going to guess it was probably my sister's first and handed down to me - perhaps it was a Scholastic book? I just loved reading about all the yummy things Frances got to eat from her lunchbox at school, especially at the end! Lillian Hoban was the author and illustrator of many favorite I Can Read books, including Joe and Betsy the Dinosaur, Silly Tilly's Thanksgiving, and a series about Arthur the Chimpanzee. Russell Hoban was the author of A Bargain for Frances, A Baby Sister for Frances, Best Friends for Frances, A Birthday for Frances, and Bread and Jam for Frances, all illustrated by Lillian Hoban.Frances turns up her nose at the soft-boiled eggs the rest of the family is having for breakfast and just eats bread and jam. The fact that an adult could put these feelings into words so beautifully is what makes this book, and this author, very special to me. In spite of the fact that all badgers are born in February, we’ve decided to do this book in January. Her opinions are her own and do not reflect those of EPL, SLJ, or any of the other acronyms you might be able to name. will make six-year-old Nora and her little brother the favorite fiction friends of all readers, any age.

I love the little songs she makes up to express her feelings about food and how they tell us more about her inner thoughts.Even though I don't actually like most of the foods that comprise Frances' particular diet (barring bread and jam, of course), the book always made me really hungry anyway. Whether shared at home or in a classroom, the engaging stories, longer sentences, and language play of Level Two books are proven to help kids take their next steps toward reading success. Little M and I are working our way slowly but steadily though the Time Magazine’s Top 100 books for Children. I remembered a teacher long ago told me her favourite picture book was Bread and Jam for Frances so I decided to explore this classic book (1964) this week. She is almost four, and although most of the time Russell thinks she is a pest, sometimes he enjoys her company. In fact, Frances is so in love with bread and jam that she exchanges her school lunch of chicken salad sandwich for bread and jam. Hoban's cheery illustrations, bathed in the iridescent yellows of summer sunshine, accompany a spare, direct text that tells of a child picking flowers for her mother. The husband and wife team wrote and illustrated many books together, many of which rank among my favorite picture books and one of which was the source of a long-standing family joke, but I’ll be reviewing that one on another day, so I won’t spoil the story here. The Hobans have done it again: a sly text attacking a real juvenile problem and attractive illustrations.
