The Panasonic JZ1500B is an excellent TV that makes Panasonic’s top picture performance more affordable than ever before. Its rich but natural colours are a particular highlight, and it's brilliantly detailed and sharp, with excellent motion handling to boot. LZ1500: Like the LZ2000, the 55in and 65in models of the LZ1500 feature a Master OLED Pro panel and Dynamic Cinema Surround Pro, though they miss out on Panasonic’s Luminance Booster technology and don’t have quite as impressive an audio system. The 48in and 42in variants have basic OLED configuration panels, less impressive speaker setups and different stands but will of course cost rather less.
The Surround mode is, surprisingly, off by default, and that does rather restrict the audio to the area immediately around the TV. Switching Dolby Surround on gives you something of a virtual surround experience, with effects stretching a fair way out to the left and right of the screen. You do then lose a little bit of punch and dynamism, but the extra cinema-style immersion is worth the sacrifice with the right content. In addition to Freeview through the aerial, this TV can be connected to a satellite input to receive dozens of free to air channels. Ensure the TX-55DX600’s noise reduction systems are turned off when watching good-quality HD and all 4K sources too, to stop them potentially starting to look soft. Its angled-in silver screen frame is exceptionally trim, in keeping with the current fashion, while its centrally fixed stand can be mounted either way round, with its shiny legs straight out, or facing inwards to create an arc in front of the screen. I preferred the straight look – but it’s nice to have the choice. Despite not being an HDR-capable TV, the TX-55DX600 uses one of Panasonic’s “Bright” panels and supports a wider colour spectrum than a bog-standard LCD TV. However, both features deliver only relatively minor improvements to brightness and colour compared with the more extreme technologies used in this year’s high-end HDR-capable TVs.For such an affordable TV, the TX-55DX600B offers plenty of picture set-up tools. Which is just as well, actually, as I found myself tinkering extensively with some of these tools during my tests.
There are no plastic panels in the box for hiding the connections (some of which face to the left-hand side of the set while the others face down) and the cable tidy system is nothing more than an inelegant clip-on piece of plastic, but that’s all part of Panasonic’s fuss-free approach. Focusing on the HDMIs, as is all-too necessary these days, the JZ1500B has two that are HDMI 2.1-certifiied. These support 4K@120Hz, VRR and ALLM. There are some limitations, though, in that 4K@120Hz and VRR can’t be used simultaneously, and 4K@120Hz signals of all types are displayed with the vertical resolution halved. That latter issue sounds like a big one, but it makes surprisingly little difference in action, and both limitations are due to be fixed via firmware updates before the end of 2021. It’s worth noting that 4K@120Hz and Dolby Vision can’t currently be used together either, and no fix for that has been announced. Dolby Vision does work at 60Hz, though, and without any of the faff that you have to go through with the Sony A80J and A90J.
