About this deal

Ethicon reported that two patients had been injured by the devices, according to the FDA. In both cases, the devices misfired, cutting portions of the rectum. Misfires or other malfunctions can prolong operations or require doctors to perform unplanned surgery to correct the damage. The Endo linear cutter staplers have applications in abdominal, gynecologic ,pediatric and thoracic surgery for resection ,transection and creation of anastomosis. When using linear staplers, the surgeon uses the handles at one end to close the “jaws” of the stapler at the other end over the tissue. When the surgeon fires the stapler, a row of staples binds the tissue together and a blade cuts the tissue between the staples. The process seals the open wound to prevent bleeding. Surgical staplers work by compressing tissue, connecting two pieces of tissue with staggered rows of B- shaped surgical staples and, in some models, cutting away excess tissue to create a clean closure of the surgical wound. Disposable Endo Cutter Stapler places two, triple-staggered rows of titanium staples and simultaneously divides the Kolesov VI, Kolesov EV, Gurevich IY, Leosko VA (1970). Titanium produces less reaction with the immune system and, being non-ferrous, does not interfere significantly with MRI scanners, although some imaging artifacts may result. Synthetic absorbable (bioabsorbable) staples are also now becoming available, based on polyglycolic acid, as with many synthetic absorbable sutures.

Staples are also a lot easier to be removed once the wound has healed up. The patient will also require less anesthesia, making the procedure much safer. Surgical staplers were developed in response to concerns about the healing of traditional sutures. Evidence seemed to suggest that sutures were more prone to leaks and separation, although further study indicates that when placed properly, conventional sutures are perfectly safe. However, the development of the surgical stapler also created a number of advantages, including speed, accuracy, and evenness of wound closure, which made the stapler a useful operating room tool. Both stapling and suturing are taught to surgeons, and training about the appropriate settings for each technique is also provided. The surgical stapled anastomosis is best known for its ability to significantly decrease operative time and its consistent results. In addition, for elective intestinal surgery, a stapled anastomosis has been shown to have equivalent outcomes when compared to a hand-sewn anastomosis and in some instances a benefit. Performing a right hemicolectomy with a stapled ileocolic anastomosis has a significantly lower leak rate than a hand sutured one ( ).
