The Kennel Club granted the Shar Pei Championship Status in 1999 and today the Shar Pei is one of the most popular breed in the UK and remains a popular pet in other countries too thanks to their extraordinary looks and kind loyal natures whether they are companions or family pets providing they live with people who are familiar with the breed or this type of dog. Interesting facts about the breed The first dogs to be taken out of China were shorter in the leg and had a lot more folds and wrinkles with many adults suffering from a condition known as entropion a painful eye condition that needs veterinary attention. Over time with careful and selective breeding these issues have been successfully bred out of the Shar Pei with breeders producing dogs with longer legs not so many folds in their skin and much healthier eyelids.

These extraordinary dogs have been around for centuries having first been developed by crossing Nordic dogs with Mastiff-type breeds. They boast a blue tongue which is one of the distinguishing physical traits of the Chow Chow and as such it is thought they too might well have been used to create the Shar Pei. The breed originated in China where they were originally bred to work as herding guarding and hunting dogs although at the time they were a popular choice as fighting dogs too.Feed and water bowls making sure they are not too deep and ideally they should be ceramic rather than plastic or metal You’ll have to do a little work to get them ready for your pooch. Fortunately and through the concerted efforts of American breeders the Shar Pei was saved from extinction with the first dog arriving on British shores in 1981 with female Shar Peis following close behind a year later and they came directly from the Hong Kong breeder Matgo Law. Around 4 years later breed numbers had risen to about 350 dogs which were all registered with the Kennel Club. Their numbers steadily rose over the following years with Shar Peis being exported to other countries which included New Zealand Australia South Africa Italy Russia and Cyprus to name but a few. Let’s put it this way: when you own a Chinese Shar-Pei, you know you own a Chinese Shar-Pei. It’s one of the most distinctive-looking breeds available – certainly one of the dog breeds that makes other uninitiated dog lovers ask “what breed is that?” Well, they have good reason to be curious: this is actually one of the rarest breeds out there and despite its relatively rich history – considering the breed’s numbers – it was not officially recognized by the American Kennel Club until 1991. As a medium-sized dog breed, the Miniature Shar-Pei should be fed a high-quality commercial dog food diet formulated for dogs of its size. Because this breed is a high-energy hunting breed, however, an active or working breed formula may be more appropriate to meet his needs. Feeding guide for a Shar PeiShar Peis although aloof and proud are also playful by nature with their families and enjoy playing interactive games. It is important to know when a Shar Pei is being playful and when they are showing a more dominant side to their natures which is why they are better suited to people who understand the nature of the breed. What about adaptability? As far as we’re concerned, no list of iconic Germans is complete with out a little love for our favorite fury shepherds. That nation has given many gifts to the world, but none compare to the awesome power of the German Shepherd. This isn’t just one of the most popular dog breeds on the market, it’s also one of the best. So, what is it about the German Shepherd that people love so much? Quite frankly, that’s almost an impossible question to answer. There’s just so much to love. It’s not all about the fact that the breed makes great police dogs, though we do adore our four legged pups of the law!

The Dachshund can trace its origins hundreds of years ago to Germany. Some sources place the origin of the breed as far as the 15th century, but a more likelier number is late 17th to early 18th century, when first concrete mentions of a dachshund-like breed can be found. Books from that era describe certain dogs named “Dachs Kriecher” (meaning “badger crawler”) or “Dachs Krieger” (“badger warrior”), and it is largely believed that this is when the Dachshund breed was actually developed as such- the previous mentions were more general and referred to all types of dogs fulfilling the role of badger hunting rather than a specific breed. The Miniature Shar-Pei is an alert and active breed that can be playful at times. These dogs have an independent air about them that sometimes translates into aloofness, though they are not inherently dominant or aggressive by nature. Miniature Shar-Peis are naturally clean and quiet – many owners compare them to cats in this way. When raised from a puppy, this breed forms extremely close bonds with family and they are very devoted to their owners. Plenty of socialization and training is recommended, however, to prevent the development of problem behaviors. These dogs can adapt to apartment life as long as they get enough exercise. Puppies sleep for up to 21 hours a day so it's important to set up a quiet area for them to nap in. The area should not be too out of the way because a puppy needs to know someone is around and that they are not all alone in a strange environment away from their mothers and their litter mates. The ideal place is somewhere they can be watched over and heard but where they would not be disturbed by too much traffic walking by. Shar Pei puppies are incredibly cute and it is all too easy to spoil them but the first few weeks after their arrival are important because it's the time to set ground rules boundaries and limits so a puppy understands what is expected of them. Setting things up for their arrival means puppy-proofing not only the home but the garden too. All puppies like to gnaw on things and this includes electric wires and cables which is why it's important for them to be put well out of a puppy's reach.

The Miniature Shar-Pei is a miniaturized version of the Chinese Shar-Pei, so it shares its origins with this breed. The Chinese Shar-Pei is considered a basal breed which simply means that its origins predate the development of modern breeds that occurred during the 19th century. The Shar-Pei comes from the Guangdong province of China where it was developed to hunt and to fend off wild boar. Because the Miniature Shar-Pei is still in development, it is not recognized as a separate breed from the Chinese Shar-Pei by the AKC – it can be registered under this name in the Non-Sporting Group. All puppies are very sensitive to loud noises so it is important to keep the volume of a television down and not to play music too loudly either because it could frighten a Shar Pei puppy and prevent them from napping as they should during the day.
