I tried it again last night and thought it was actually quite nasty and what I was going to do with it!

Immensely smooth all the way through, this rum unwinds with a gently wavering sensation of oak, sherry and raisin. It tastes like an agricole, albeit an exceptional one, and tastes at least as good as the far more expensive Clement XO (imho). The Bermúdez distillery indeed uses time-tested ancestral methods to extract the best from ingredients and produce a liquor of unparalleled quality, all while minimizing their ecological footprint. At first sip, flavors of toasted oak and vanilla delight the senses with hints of raisin and sherry, built upon layers of spice and sweet dried fruits. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.Initial taste reveals a nectar-sweet quality, leading to a weightier body that’s serious in character but not overbearing. The look and color is nice with a reddish mahogany glow in the bottle and a light yellowish amber in the glass. KIRK AND SWEENEY was a wooden schooner, best known for smuggling rum from the Caribbean to the Northeast during the early years of Prohibition. The aroma presents subtle notes of dried fruits and sweet, toasted breads, along with a base toffee, fresh honey and caramelized sugar.

This full-bodied rum delivers an intriguing range of aromas, from intense vanillas to faint notes of sherry and raisins–all built upon a notable undercurrent of roasted cane sugars. However based upon how good the 12 year it, I expect the 23 year rum to be, at least, equally as good. I let it sit for about 5 minutes before smelling and there was a strong presence of vanilla, caramel, sugar and oak. Small consolation, but I’ll take it, all is not lost, because at least I can use this as a base rum when I make rum cocktails. However, my rum cupboard is quite full, and for the first time ever, I'm half tempted to pour it down the sink (though I won't end up doing that, more than likely I'll try and give it away).Anyway the 12 year reserva is a decent but not great rum hint of citrus some alcohol scent and burn.

This Reserva expression packs lots of flavour within the snazzy round bottle, with notes of vanilla and dried fruits aplenty.

Playing off the concept of global navigation, an antique nautical map of the main rum smuggling route is silkscreened around the circumference of the bottle. It offers a bit of vanilla, dark chocolate and dark berries, but is dominated by somewhat bitter oaky notes.
