About this deal

Blaine holds a Master of Arts in Theology and Culture from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. The Bible is filled with the most incredible stories of blood and guts and gore and pain and trauma and goodness and curiosity and, and beauty and hope.

I found it interesting how this reflected his healing, as his story became more straightforward and less fractured. And, it’s an incredible story of what it means to come out of the darkness and into the light and see the truth. I was coming to the back of the cave and saying, there’s so much more shouting in the dark places, and the theaters and the, cinemas and the places where I was creating art. It’s just the, the gift of her presence, just even having her face for a second, is, again, the light.

Desperate to find hope, he gave up a budding career and took a major life detour where he discovered that facing his past was the key to unlocking a new kind of creativity. Here is a memoir for those of us who have ever been stuck, addicted, ashamed, discontented, or lost. And yet I had not done the work of going back into the particularities of those moments, of those stories so that I could actually change the past. Blaine pulls back the layers of perfectionism and performance that overshadow much of church culture and provides a refreshing drink from the well of grace. Instead of a mere cheerleader who could land a round-off, I got something better: the raddest rock climber, snowboarder, wilderness therapist, hiker, surfer, and model a director could hope for. But as a director in the commercial space, the client/agency has a problem, and they are hoping YOU can solve it for them. Blaine manages to somehow weave themes of acting, allegory, family, addiction, faith, and redemption into one beautifully written account of his own healing.

This book will open your eyes, so that you can see the world, and your own story, through a lens of grace and compassion. Although I had never heard of the author, this book caught my eye because of the title, which I recognized as a reference to Plato's cave analogy. It was the energy and the invitation to, when you don’t have words, will you start listening not just to what’s inside, but what your partner is inviting you to hear about not just your failure, but about what was happening for her in the midst. This book brought me comfort in the hours when I didn't realize how much I needed the warmth and honesty of Blaine's words. Because the goal for me was just to try to tell the truth, and knowing that if we were going to invite people, you know, at the end of this time, in a church service to give their life to Christ and, be changed and renewed and have some form of healing, I felt like it was a disservice, to do that without inviting them first into a taste of what, it might actually look like.

Was having trouble finding this specific edition (didn't like the UK edition's cover, and there are quite a few different versions of this book existing) so very glad I found it from here! And so as I am still kind of doing the spiral dynamics of recovery of, trying to move forward, but, you know, sometimes having relapsed or where things, take what feels like a backwards slide, and knowing that that movement backwards does have the opportunity if I care for those places of harm and of relapse and of hurt to myself and others, and if I bless it with curiosity, it has the, potential to propel me even further forward, rather than being stuck in that place. And the way you described it, was that taking moment of your past, a moment of trauma, moment of pain or hurt, that occurred in the past, but we project that idea onto the future.

As you’ll see in the spot, I pulled some of my shots directly from the GIFS I placed in the treatment. Blaine manages to somehow weave themes of acting, allegory, addiction, family, and faith into one beautifully written account of his own healing. He holds a Master’s degree in Theology and Culture from the Seattle School for Theology and Psychology and has appeared in many stage productions and television shows. What awaits us on the other side of turning our back on constant incarnations in a pit of suffering?

We had a blast collaborating closely over the course of a few months to help storyboard, pre-viz, and ultimately bring all the pieces together in post for a wild ride of a pickleball match up. From his time in Prison Break and other shows to his work as a creative director for one of the most influential churches in America, Blaine has been a long-distance roll model for the creative endeavors in my life.
