Let’s say you see the group a mile off into the distance. The average walking pace for most people for a mile is somewhere around 15 minutes. With a Scorpion 2, that would give you a ten-minute head start. Inside Space A very impressive tent by anyone’s standards and is not made with cheap materials, it is a top quality product made to some exacting standards.
The classic dome design gives plenty of headspace throughout, making this feel like a roomy two man option. With taped seams, you’ll find you stay dry in moderate rain showers, but you may want to look at a different option if you’re spending prolonged periods camping in wet weather. You can have the central door open (either strapped at the top or held with poles to create a porch) – the normal configuration. Price – How much are you willing to spend? Depending on the tent features, size and weight, two person tents vary in price. Either side open with the other side and central door closed – great for cooking when the rain is coming down. The inner tent is constructed of 190t Nylon with 50D Polyester “No-See-Um-Mesh” vents. Finally, the groundsheet is made of 190t Nylon PU 5000mm. Overall this means a great deal of weather protection as well as durability. Putting up the Scorpion 2 was a fairly simple affair with colour-coordinated poles to help you get it right first time. I found the poles to be slightly fiddly to get through the sleeves – they got caught a few times – but this isn’t enough to put me off the tent. There is a hanging loop near the door of the inner tent, but unfortunately this ripped off when I was inspecting it. I’d also have to question the effectiveness of the storm-flaps on the outer zips: they’re held in place by one piece of Velcro and were blown open even in light winds. Snugpak Scorpion 2 VerdictUsing its sleek design and its 5000-mm polyurethane fly, the Scorpion 2 is able to deflect fierce winds and heavy rainfall, making this tent suitable for the harshest weather. The inner tent also has three Polyester mesh vents to allow for ventilation without allowing bugs to get in. Features There are a few other great features about the Scorpion 2 that I liked as well. The color is a matte green rather than the gaudy neon colors that seem to be a requirement for most other tents on the market. This might matter more if you’re camping above tree line and want to be seen for safety purposes, but that’s not what you want if you’re bugging out. The Quasar 200 has a large covered porch with a detachable groundsheet that’s lightweight and perfect for extra storage.
The Scorpion 2 features room enough for 2 occupants and kit with a front entrance and ample vestibule for added gear storage. A 5000mm hydrostatic-head flysheet provides storm protection with a bathtub style floor to protect against pooling in heavy rain. The Scorpion 2 Tent gives you a robust expedition level shelter in the Snugpak Professional range. This versatile camping shelter is built around a super stable geodesic design which offers a practical living space with a low profile that holds up to the harshest of weather. Once the free-standing outer is up, the inner is joined on by a large number of attachment points. While it got a bit tedious hooking them all in, they do a great job of keeping the inner taut and away from the outer.
Several unique features make this tent resistant to all weather camping. In-built mosquito nets are useful to keep bugs outside, and the outer layer of this tent is removable, which is a good option for keeping the interior temperature down on warm nights. For an easy setup and to keep the rain out, the groundsheet on this model is sewn in. With a 3000mm waterproof rating and taped seams, this tent can handle heavy rain, which is a must-have when you’re camping in the UK. One question we do have is whether the top of the tent would deal well with snow. It’s fairly flat and due to the ridges caused by the poles snow would build up rather than be displaced to the ground. We couldn’t test this fully, but similar tent designs have been known to have problems with snow. It’s for this reason we classify the Scorpion 2 as a 3 – 4 season tent rather than a full 4 season tent. With a versatile front vestibule area that is perfect for storing your gear overnight or using your stove, it allows for flexible setups whilst keeping you comfortable and protected in wet conditions.
