About this deal

Sealing the deal inked by the gameplay is the impeccable atmosphere created by Mantis Falls. Its sepia, typewritten cards are soaked in moonlight and ebbing streetlamps. The few supporting characters encountered by players appear as noir silhouettes, with delightfully pulp descriptions like “Ms Cardello, the woman with volition” and “Mr Edwards, the man with connections”. Events, meanwhile, have terse, evocative names like “purge”, “witch hunt” and “the whistling wind”. With its sparing brushes of theme, it sharply conjures the feeling of crunching along a sidewalk in the cold, dark night, glancing behind you every few steps and listening through the silence for a second set of footsteps. In many of the games we played, the player who won achieved victory by letting a color pile become large and focusing on that pile.

Pros: Production, amazing (even came with sleeves!). Top notch rulebook and card compendium. No communication restrictions! (you can say anything you want, except for showing them the actual card or describing it as "proof"). In Innovation, your options open and close based on icon counts; your options in MF are similarly partitioned via the same-suit restrictions when taking Action Plays (there are six suits: Lilac, Granite, Amber, Hunter, Royal, Midnight). I focused on hand management but Event management (ie, communication during Unseen Events) is also a skill to develop over multiple plays. There are a lot of other interesting effects among the Action cards, too many to list here. Most have a way of adding to the tension or tactics. Additionally, there are add-on Modules that aid in fighting any monotony that may develop from playing the base game. Some combinations of Action cards and Events allow you to call on Allies to help as well. Analysis and Thoughts

The verdict: Best board games

Mantis is a card game that is described as having the simplicity of Uno and the depth of Gin Rummy. It’s appropriate for both kids and adults, as it’s super simple to learn. This system ensures that Witness players start out with uncertainty regarding how far to cooperate and trust. At some point during the game, a Witness will have to make a choice to trust based on their assessment of the other player. or are you an Assassin? Setup The Starting Layout The players must work their way out of town along a dark road, dealing with the threats they encounter along the way - which may or may not include their companion. | Image credit: Distant Rabbit Games

Next is the Event Processing phase where the previously drawn Event is actually processed. Sometimes, the effects of Action Processing have negated the harmful possibilities of the Event or have neutralized it completely. Sometimes there are positive bonuses for successfully defeating an Event. It has a good competitive element without being a hidden traitor game or the use of hidden role cards. Plus, there’s just enough strategy involved to make it fun without being overbearing. VICTORY CONDITIONS • Witnesses win if no witness is dead (can occur with the death of an assassin or if all players escape). • Assassin wins if they are alive and a witness is dead. (Games in which an assassin and a witness both die are tie games for all players.) The death of a player ends the game (although another player may first need to resolve a Last Gasp if at their maximum wounds).Winding up for a big Score can be how you win the game. I mean, if you can pull off a major Score action, that’s cool and all, and that can win you the game in a single turn. It’s just hard to do well, since as soon as you get enough cards, you become everyone’s target. That concludes the turn. If it does not match, leave it in the opponent’s tank. Successfully stealing does not move the cards in your score pile. 3. Play until someone wins Discard/conserve energy: After the two active players have made their main plays, the bystander may either discard up to two cards or place one card face up in Conserved Energy. • Draw: After the two active players have had their draw from the draw phase, the bystander also draws their hand to full. • Bystander abilities: Cards in the Triad Module may refer to the bystander by name. These cards are NOT played by the bystander directly, but when an active player processes such a card, it gives the bystander specific abilities or choices. OTHER RULES In short, it’s a game of matching cards, determining probability and messing with your fellow players along the way. You are in a mob-ruled town in the 1940s, and at least one of you was a witness to something you were not supposed to see. You need to make it across town alive to where there are people that can protect you, but your journey will be a dangerous one.
