About this deal

Symptoms of systemic salicylate poisoning (tinnitus, dizziness and deafness) have been reported after the application of salicylic acid to large areas of skin and for prolonged periods. Salicylism may also occur in the unlikely event of large quantities being ingested. Salicylism is unlikely to occur if Salicylic Acid Ointment BP is used as indicated.

Apply to affect areas at least twice weekly. Leave lather on scalp or skin for two minutes then rinse. Repeat if necessary. Salicylic acid isn’t listed as an active ingredient, so it may be used in a very low concentration.

Salicylic Acid Lotion - Clinical Pharmacology

This Paula’s Choice cleanser contains just 0.5% salicylic acid, so it’s a great choice for beginners or those worried about irritation. The formula is enhanced with arginine, an amino acid that soothes sensitive and irritated skin. It also contains a vitamin to soften and hydrate the skin. While it’s not the most potent product, the low concentration is ideal for those prone to irritation. Of course, salicylic acid is famed for its spot-fighting powers, but a good product will actually do much more than shrink down an angry pimple, as Dr. Gross explains. “A keratolytic agent, salicylic acid reduces the pH of skin and increases hydration as well as encouraging the process of desquamation (the shedding of dead skin cells). It can also directly dissolve keratin plugs (known as keratosis pilaris) and regulate skin cells to fight acne and blemishes." What are the differences between AHAs and BHA?

When we asked dermatologists for their preferred salicylic acid products, this CeraVe cleanser was the clear winner. Dermatologists raved about it for its mild yet effective formulation. “This is my favorite end-of-day face wash for acne-prone skin,” says Neil Farnsworth, MD, a Houston-based board-certified dermatologist at Westlake Dermatology. He adds that, even if you don’t have breakouts, it’s a good way to remove the day’s grime before bedtime. Then pat dry without rinsing. As it’s oil-soluble, salicylic acid can penetrate down into pores and dissolve excess sebum and debris, making it ideal for oily and acne-prone skin,’ explains Dr Zamani. It also regulates oil production.’

The major metabolites identified in the urine after topical administration are salicyluric acid (52%), salicylate glucuronides (42%) and free salicylic acid (6%). The urinary metabolites after percutaneous absorption differ from those after oral salicylate administration; those derived from percutaneous absorption contain more salicylate glucuronides and less salicyluric and salicylic acid. Almost 95% of a single dose of salicylate is excreted within 24 hours of its entrance into the extracellular space. Fifty to eighty percent of salicylate is protein bound to albumin. Salicylates compete with the binding of several drugs and can modify the action of these drugs. By similar competitive mechanisms other drugs can influence the serum levels of salicylate. (See

Salicylate poisoning is usually associated with plasma concentrations >350mg/L (2.5mmol/L). Most adult deaths occur in patients whose concentrations exceed 700mg/L (5.1mmol/L). Single doses less than 100mg/kg are unlikely to cause serious poisoning. Just dab some on with a cotton swab and let the mixture of salicylic acid and sulfur do their thing. Salicylic acid unclogs while sulfur purifies. Together, the duo zaps zits while you sleep. It smells a little funky at first thanks to the sulfur, but the scent fades and it’s a small price to pay for clear skin. Do not use this medicine on irritated skin or on any area that is infected or reddened. Also, do not use this medicine if you are a diabetic or if you have poor blood circulation. The SA Smoothing Cream gently exfoliates bumps and dry patches without compromising the skin's natural barrier. Developed with dermatologists, the CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream also contains hydrating hyaluronic acidand three essential ceramides.

It’s targeted to normal skin types, so though it’s an exfoliating cleanser, it’s gentle enough for daily use. Ceramides, CeraVe’s hero ingredients, help moisturize and support skin barrier function while hyaluronic acid draws in water. It also contains niacinamide, a B vitamin that soothes inflammation. Finally, it’s fragrance-free, which Dr. Jeffy loves for those with sensitive skin. To find the best salicylic acid products, we started by talking to board-certified dermatologists. We got their expert opinion on who could benefit from salicylic acid, what types of products are best, and what concentration and active ingredients to look for. The dermatologists shared their favorite brands and products, and we used their advice to conduct our own research. This is not a list of all drugs or health problems that interact with salicylic acid cream, gel, liquid, and lotion (acne).

Contrary to popular belief, you can use salicylic acid if you have sensitive skin—with a few caveats. Before using a new active ingredient, remember to perform a patch test. In all skin types, salicylic acid has been known to cause dryness, irritation, and sensitivity to sunlight. To reduce these side effects, start slow and stay on top of using your moisturizer and SPF. Salicylic acid is safe to use every day. To prevent irritation and over-exfoliation, gradually increase the frequency. Dermatologists recommend using salicylic acid 2-3 times a week at first and slowly working your way up to daily use.
