The sinner’s guilt is seen in his relationships with others. Immediately Adam and Eve lost the open relationship they had enjoyed with one another (“naked and not ashamed,” 2:25). Their fig leaves picture a barrier between them, which is seen even more when God confronts Adam and he blames Eve (3:12). Nice guy, huh? He’s trying to save his own skin, even if God zaps his wife off the face of the earth. At least Eve was nice enough to blame the serpent! But Adam’s blaming Eve did not foster their relationship.

Jesus asked for the stone to be moved. Martha was concerned that the tomb was going to be opened; the stench of death would fill the air. Yet Jesus said to remove the stone. It’s only after the stone was removed that Jesus called out Lazarus’ name and Lazarus, by the power of God, walked out of the tomb alive.

Behind the serpent, Satan is condemned to an existence of frustration and defeat. This is seen most pointedly in the cross, where Satan thought he had finally defeated God’s program by killing the Savior. But the cross was God’s greatest victory, because in it and in the resurrection of Christ, Satan’s final doom was secured. Though during this age God allows Satan some leash, so that he wins some battles, he’s going to lose the war! It has different names & has been experienced by people of faith throughout the centuries. It’s not true absence, it’s not that God is actually gone, but rather a profound sense of absence.The truth is that God cares!He cares about you at the worst moment of your life. You are not forsaken and you are not alone. Will proclaiming grace as God’s undeserved favor result in people taking sin lightly? Why/why not (see Rom. 6)? If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, God is with you, beside you, above you, and inside you. God’s presence and watchful care never leave you. If you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, God is right in front of you, inviting you, drawing you, offering you the love, mercy, and grace that He longs to give you.
