Perhaps one of the most impressive things about ‘Long Way Down’ is how, despite being an album based on a simple set of concepts, it expresses a level of maturity not seen by other artists of a similar age. It proves to be an impressive collection of honest, memorable songs beautifully executed and powerfully delivered. My advice? Catch this one while he is still relatively new – he is only going to get bigger! Remarkably ‘Tears That Never Dry’ is worse still, performing a laughable imitation of a woman trying to overcome a break-up: when she isn’t impulsively dyeing her hair pink, she’s holding secretive meetings with “the girls” behind lowered blinds. ‘Over You Yet’ meanwhile finds him tutting at an ex like a scandalised headteacher. “ My my my my my, you’re moving pretty fast, hanging out with guys I know you’ve got a past”. Rawlinson, Kevin (19 June 2013). " 'Hello, NME? I'd like to complain about your Tom Odell review. Why? I'm his dad' ". The Independent . Retrieved 30 October 2018. Odell announced that his first single from the album would be " Can't Pretend" which was released worldwide on March 6, 2013. It was later announced the second single to come from the album was " Hold Me". Odell performed "Hold Me" and " Can't Pretend" on both Alan Carr: Chatty Man and The Jonathan Ross Show. His highly anticipated full-length debut album, ‘Long Way Down’, therefore marks the end of a long journey and the beginning of what looks to be a very successful career ahead of him. Odell came in to RAK Studios in St Johns Wood with producer Dan Grech-Marguerat to record the album in the summer of 2012. To promote the album, Odell went on two tours. The first was a smaller, mini-tour which took place in March 2013, three months before the album's release; the second tour takes place in autumn 2013. In 2012 Odell appeared as an opening act for Jake Bugg on the UK leg of his tour in November 2012. Corner, Lewis (24 June 2013). "Tom Odell: 'Long Way Down' - Album review". Digital Spy . Retrieved 14 January 2016.Since the release of his 2013 debut album ‘Long Way Down’ Chichester singer-songwriter Tom Odell has made a name for himself in releasing pleasantly uneventful indie-pop love songs. Whipping up stirring emotion through a series of piano-pounds and fist-clenching choruses – and the snarl of his powerful vocal – Odell ranked among a series of male pop artists who seem engineered for commercial success, but tread little new ground with their galumphing heartbreak ballads. Eight years and three Odell albums later, the direction of the most exciting pop has shifted towards genre-slippy, sample-heavy music – mainstream pop records now take on a more experimental structure, often punctuated by conceptual interludes and hip-hop inspired production. And armed with a white vest top and a Moog synth, fourth album ‘Monsters’ is Tom Odell’s attempt at getting involved and shaking things up. Just as there was a certain brooding promise to his teaser hit ‘Another Love’ before someone waterboarded it with cod-pagan pomp until it was a trembling, desperate mess prepared to do anything its overlords told it to, ‘Long Way Down’ is a decently bland album by a (probably) decently bland sort of bloke that’s been shafted so hard by The Man it’s submitted to gospel choirs (‘Can’t Pretend’), Coldplay chorus ballast (‘I Know’, ‘Till I Lost’) and Mumford money jigs (‘Grow Old With Me’) – all over-emoting songs about nothing. Lead single ‘Hold Me’ erupts with pounding piano riffs and crashing acoustics. Odell’s passion is evident through his howling vocal delivery, whilst his delicate singing during the bridge is reminiscent of his typically endearing, soulful voice that is most commonly heard. The song in its entirety is extremely catchy, with the powerfully clattering instruments only emphasising the need to sing along. So far, 2013 has been quite a year for British singer/songwriter, Tom Odell. After releasing his critically acclaimed EP ‘Songs from Another Love’ last year, he has since gone on to win the influential BRITs Critics’ Choice award, been nominated for the BBC Sounds of 2013 and has appeared on countless TV shows.
