Our Universal Guide provides you with recommendations on popular shows and movies from top apps such as Netflix, Prime Video, UKTV Play and much more*. Spend less time searching and more time watching on your Samsung Smart TV. Samsung would rather you call this a ‘Neo QLED’ TV, but we know the truth: it’s a mini-LED TV. What’s more, it’s part of Samsung’s most affordable range of mini-LED TVs. This is good news, because although the company’s QN95A mini-LED TV that we tested earlier this year is a great performer, it’s pretty pricey. FAQ for Samsung TV. To its credit, it’s never hard or coarse – even at volume, and it will go pretty loud by prevailing standards – but the sound it makes is insubstantial, and consequently quite strongly at odds with the pictures it produces. The picture quality here (as long as you're not watching content of less than 1920x1080 resolution) is so impressive, it makes the relative weakness of the accompanying sound a moot point.

Another option that outperforms the Samsung QN85A in terms of contrast is the U8G from Hisense. It also has a dimming feature, meaning it'll look a bit better than the Samsung TV in a dark room. However, its viewing angles aren't as good, so it'd only make sense if seating is arranged directly in front of it. Ask more of the QN85A where upscaling is concerned, though, and things take a turn for the worse. The Samsung just doesn’t seem to have what it takes to make real low-spec stuff (like a 720x480 DVD, for example) look anything other than coarse and noisy. Watchable’ is a relative term when it comes to upscaled content of a lesser standard, though. No one’s expecting miracles when watching a standard-definition 4:3 re-run of Only Fools and Horses but the Samsung’s Neo Quantum Processor 4K does throw in the towel somewhat—the images it comes up with are noisy, ill-defined and rough. It’s like an approximation of a television broadcast. Watch 1000s of TV shows and movies, for free, with Samsung TV Plus. Sometimes the CGI elements of a film like this can take on a rather artificial cast in the hands of less capable screens, but the QN85A is adaptable enough to make these transitions all-but seamless. The movie’s relentless, rapid motion causes few alarms, either—in fact, on the very rare occasions that the screen can be seen to be working hard to stay in control of on-screen movement, it only serves to emphasise how authoritative the Samsung otherwise is. Two full-range drivers at the top of the frame, and another two at the bottom, powered by 60 watts of amplification and designed to offer a degree of synchronicity between on-screen movement and audio placement, looks admirable when written down. In practice, though, the Samsung is a rather boneless listen—it’s not actively unpleasant, and it doesn’t get too shouty at volume, but there’s a bluntness about the sound it makes that’s quite strongly at odds with its images. The best soundbars for small TVs can bring you big sound from a compact unit and make speech clearer Are you expecting some kind of flight of fancy where the design of the Samsung is concerned, a tearing up of the rulebook? Hopefully not, because if you are you’re going to be disappointed. The Samsung QE55QN85A, in design terms at least, is absolutely by the book.

Samsung QN85A review (55QN85A): a QLED 4K TV with elite - T3

Once the sun's inclination drops in autumn, any light striking side-on causes a rainbow effect on the screen. As the sun continues to drop, the rainbow effect increases until in December it's 100% of the screen. That’s not a bad thing, though—the design of a television isn’t supposed to draw attention to itself. The 55-inch QN85A is a tidy 706 x 1227 x 27mm (hwd), with only a brief silver bezel containing that great big expanse of screen. It’s worth noting that, while the QN85A has the same number of dimming zones as the 55-inch version of the range-topping QN95A (a touch over 500), its peak brightness is a ‘mere’ 1,500 nits where the QN95A can summon close to 2,000. Still, in this context ‘1,500’ is a pretty big number, one that any number of OLED TV owners would sacrifice a kidney for. Keep your style and your view on point. Effortlessly mount your TV flush against the wall using the Slim Fit TV Wall-Mount*. Then let it blend beautifully with your home.

These prices bring the QN85A into more-or-less direct competition with some of the best OLED TVs around. The likes of LG, Panasonic and Sony – to name but three – all offer a high-performance TV of this size for very similar money. Design Discover an abundance of apps and services to simply enjoy, only on Samsung Smart TV Smart TV powered by Tizen So it turns out Mini-LED isn’t only for the very well-heeled. The QN85A isn’t flawless in the way it performs, but it’s mighty close – and those of us who have them should be ready to be disabused of our LCD preconceptions.

Whether you’re playing native 4K content, or upscaling from HD or SD, the Q85R produces astonishing detail. The AI upscaling is particularly impressive, thanks, presumably, to its Quantum Processor 4K chip. There are 50 preset images to choose from including a selection of lighting patterns, nature scenes, abstract oil paintings and other artwork.

You could also argue that the Q85R is a touch less sharp than the Q90R, that it’s missing the super-elite contrast and ultra-fine colour nuance to make those pictures pop as well as the very best, but we’re talking fairly slim margins.
