World War I is in full swing with Matthew and Thomas Barrow fighting in the French trenches, later joined by footman William. Downton Abbey becomes a convalescent home and hospital of sorts for wounded soldiers. Isobel and Lady Crawley butt heads. Sybil trains to become a nurse and falls in love with Branson. Lady Edith looks after soldiers. Lady Mary is courted by the loathsome newspaper mogul, Richard Carlisle. Matthew finds a new fiancé, Lavinia Swire. Matthew is gravely injured and can’t walk. Romance brews between Anna and Bates, but Bates is accused of murder.Eventually, the title goes to Matthew Crawley, a distant cousin (and middle-class lawyer) who was not expecting to inherit anything. The first season follows Matthew (and his mother, Isobel) as they try to adjust to their new life while also dealing with the challenges an upper-class lifestyle demands. Lucy Smith, the secret daughter of Maud, learns of her mother’s identity later in her life. Meanwhile, Maud plans to leave her fortune to Lucy, while Violet schemes to prevent this from happening. But eventually, they work it out in favor of Lucy as initially planned. Meanwhile, Matthew, Thomas, and William fight in the war (tragically leading to the death of William). Sybil becomes a nurse (despite her family’s protests) and falls in love with Branson. Matthew becomes engaged to a woman who’s not Mary, while Mary begins dating a ruthless newspaper man – even though she wants to be with Matthew. Elsewhere, Mrs. Hughes has a health scare, Lady Edith develops an interest in journalism (and in a particular handsome journalist), Lord and Lady Grantham have more marital troubles after Sybil’s death, Anna fights for the release of Bates from prison, Thomas gets in a serious mess, O’Brien continues to scheme, and so much more addictive drama!

Lord Grantham’s lousy investment leads to possible bankruptcy for Downton (although when Matthew inherits a substantial sum of money, they can save the estate).Thomas is too friendly with new footman Jimmy. Lady Edith becomes a newspaper columnist. Isobel offers Ethel a job. Lady Sybil dies during childbirth. Depending on what Fellowes has in mind, we could see the Crawleys struggling to adapt to modernisation with World War II looming on the horizon. Downton Abbeyis the award-winning historical drama series (it won 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, numerous BAFTAS, SAG awards, and more) from the talented Julian Fellowes, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Gosford Park. But thankfully, the season ends on a good note! Mary and Matthew become engaged after many years of miscommunication and tragedy! Finally! She’s a compassionate idealist who often finds herself at odds with the Dowager Countess (they love to debate with each other) because of Isobel’s liberal views. Although underneath their banter, they are the best of friends. Much happens in season 6, ultimately leading to a lot of resolution and happy endings for the characters (and fans of the show!) But he also has a deep respect and love for those he works with and the people he serves, especially Lady Mary – who he loves like a daughter. Mrs. Patmore (by the end of A New Era) is in a romantic relationship with Mr. Mason, a local farmer. Daisy Mason/Parker (Sophie McShera)It's also unlikely we'd see Nathalie Baye or Jonathan Zaccaï again, as their story is wrapped up with the transfer of the villa to the Crawleys. Downton Abbey 3 plot: How does Downton Abbey 2 set up a sequel? We meet Lady Maud Bagshaw – the Queen’s lady-in-waiting – and a cousin of Violet’s. She has a secret illegitimate daughter, Lucy, masquerading as her maid (who Tom falls in love with). Downton mourns Sybil. Lord Grantham loses his bedroom privileges. Baby Sybil will be catholic. O’Brien is up to no good. Andrew Parker is Daisy’s husband with a promising career at Downton Abbey – now in the running for the head butler. He also has an interest in farming. In other developments, Anna and Bates have a baby, Thomas gets the job as the head butler, Isobel Crawley and Lord Merton marry despite his conniving children trying to keep them apart, and Cora and Robert work past their marital problems. Downton Abbeyseason 2 has nine episodes (eight regular episodes and one Christmas special). The series begins in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and ends at the beginning of 1920. Season 2 Summary: William Mason(Thomas Howes): He was the second footman at Downton, fighting alongside Matthew during the war. He died from injuries during the war but not before marrying Daisy. Cora and Isobel clash over the alpha position at the hospital. Matthew and William go missing on the front. Ethel the maid gets pregnant by a soldier.

A Labour government is elected in England. We’re well into the roaring twenties, post war, pre-war period on Downton Abbey. Little does Downton know, the worst is yet to come, foreshadowed by Michael Gregson’s disappearance at the hands of Nazi thugs. The local war memorial features prominently in this season, especially with Mrs Patmore. The police are still hunting down whoever murdered the valet Mr. Green. Russian refugees arrive this season, creating some intriguing plot details where Countess Violet is concerned. Lady Rose heads toward marriage. The drama continues with Edith’s secret baby Marigold. Lady Mary remains single but takes Tony Gillingham for a secret marriage test drive. Jimmy leaves Downton and Molesley is the only footman. There’s more modernization on the way with a housing development at Downton Abbey. Revolutionary schoolteacher Sarah Bunting comes and goes, finally wearing out her welcome at Downton family gatherings. Isis has cancer.
