About this deal

I read so many 5 star reviews of people who loved this book "Fly Away" that I couldn't wait to read it.

Tully’s mother, Dorothy Hart, is an unstable woman who abandoned her child too many times in the past and ultimately broke her heart. Through all the loss and reassessing of life after death, sifting through past mistakes, and facing hard truths, Tully and Kate’s family’s journey is sad but ultimately heart-warming as stalwart Kate continues to tell the story from the other side. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Firefly Lane showrunner Maggie Friedman said: "I hope that people who are big fans of the book can watch the show and be like, 'Oh, my God, there's that moment I remember! Tully tries to fulfill her deathbed promise to Kate--to be there for Kate's children--but Tully knows nothing about family or motherhood or taking care of people. There were several places in the first book that eluded to a story line to explain how Cloud could leave her own daughter.

What narrative devices did the author use to bring the more mystical elements of life, death, and life-after-death to the novel? If this accident/coma had been only one incident in the story, it could have shortened it by so much and then there could have been more story. But then Kate is diagnosed with terminal cancer, and, as with the series, Tully drops everything to reconcile with her before her death. Kate’s daughter, sixteen-year-old Marah Ryan, is as lost in her grief as Tully is…until she falls in love with a young man who makes her smile again and leads her into his dangerous, shadowy world.

The relationship between Dorothy and Marge – We find out that when Kate was sick and dying, Margie would go over and sit with Dorothy at her house.

Jess: seeing Dorothy’s redemption as a mother and learning more about her backstory that made her the way she was; I am so thankful she was able to turn her life around and come back to help Tully when Tully really needed it.

They laughed with Tully and cried with Kate and anguished over Tully's fractured relationship with her mother. An emotionally complex, heart-wrenching novel about love, motherhood, loss, and new beginnings, Fly Away reminds us that where there is life, there is hope, and where there is love, there is forgiveness. Maybe Marah’s cutting was a way to feel something – when you’re in pain, sometimes you can feel numb, so at least feeling pain means you’re feeling something. In particular, the book follows the three women—Tully, Marah, and Cloud—and traces their journey past and present. Tully tries to fulfill her deathbed promise to Kate---to be there for Kate's children---but Tully knows nothing about family or motherhood or taking care of people. But I wanted to see Tully develop as a character in this book too, because I felt like she didn’t have any character development in Firefly Lane.
