About this deal

For the past couple of years, I have been blogging about my love of books, writing book reviews, and posting reading recaps of all the books I have read.

But when she lands a job writing obituaries, Nell meets the fabulous Cricket, an eighty-something widow with challenges of her own, and they strike up an unlikely friendship. Friends that I used to have but don't have anymore and didn't even think about them for years until today and all I remember is all the fun that we used to have and nothing else. I'm at chapter 18 and would enjoy this story except that the volume goes from almost silent to too loud so I am constantly adjusting the volume up and down. Potentially a few triggers so worth looking in to but really enjoyable follow up and would highly recommend.I picked this one up as I heard a lot of hype about it , and I can say I absolutely devoured it in one sitting , I really enjoyed it and also taken a lot of inspiration from this book , and this is hard to find as a lot of books don’t get it right, this one had me giggling, smiling, and sometimes teary . Nell also starts the titular podcast, which goes viral and allows her friends and women everywhere to stop pretending their lives are perfect.

She’s just broken up with her fiance, moved back in with her parents, and hasn’t got a proper career to speak of. Very enjoyable and entertaining book with the telling of life how it is with none of us achieving perfection or things turning out as we may have planned.Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up is a funny, heartwarming commentary on how society norms -particularly for women- and pressure from the media can make us feel like failures, when actually we’re not. I wasn’t completely invested in the romance aspect of the novel, although this did offer a lot of entertainment and I found it very relatable. The Narration by Sally Phillips is stunning- funny, sad and able to penetrate even the most depressed soul. Yanagihara ( The People in the Trees, 2013) takes the still-bold leap of writing about characters who don’t share her background; in addition to being male, JB is African-American, Malcolm has a black father and white mother, Willem is white, and “Jude’s race was undetermined”—deserted at birth, he was raised in a monastery and had an unspeakably traumatic childhood that’s revealed slowly over the course of the book.

I actually thought she added to the humour of the book a lot and I definitely smiled at a lot more of her lines than I did Nell’s. Nell Stevens is forty-something who has recently moved back to the UK after her life in California fell apart -including her relationship. But the most unexpected surprise is when Nell strikes up a friendship with an eighty something year old widow whose husband she’s writing an obituary piece about. It is easy to feel sorry for Nell, but at the same time we want her to develop some resilience and inner strength to rise above it all.Four men who meet as college roommates move to New York and spend the next three decades gaining renown in their professions—as an architect, painter, actor and lawyer—and struggling with demons in their intertwined personal lives. Life, like us, is a sum of moving parts, and if we’re lucky, we get to keep f**king up, figuring it out and laughing in the face of it all. I was frustrated that Nell didn’t speak to her best friend about what was going on, as it seemed like these women were behaving more like teenagers than grown adults.
